Red Delicious: the sweet details
Sometimes pure chance produces something really great, the Red Delicious, for example. Even today, we are not sure from which parent variety it originates. In 1872 a farmer named Jesse Hiatt, found the chance seedling in the USA. Because the Red Delicious is as tempting as its name, it quickly became established as a current variety of cultivated apple. For a long time it was even the most popular apple in the world and it still performs well on the world market.
It has already bequeathed its good genes to several more modern varieties. The
Fuji is more or less a direct descendant of the Red Delicious and the
Gala is, so to speak, a "grandchild".
