Gala: the sweet details

The Gala is harvested a good four to six weeks before its parent apple, the Golden Delicious. In September, the first apples land in your fruit bowl and you can enjoy this apple right into spring. In cold storage these red delicacies keep for several months. The Gala motto is "There is enough for everyone!" for it does not tend towards alternate bearing and usually produces high yields every year.
Although the name "Gala" sounds very like the name for a German apple, the variety originates from New Zealand. It was bred there in 1939 and very quickly conquered vast areas of the world.
Also very popular with those with a sweet tooth, the Gala's distinctive sweetness and low acid content make it very attractive. These characteristics make it the perfect snack and the ideal ingredient for cakes, desserts and creative dishes. Galactic goodness!
