My story
My great-grandfather had already grown apples at the "Rumplerhof" in Castelbello. At that time, it was the noble and spicy Kalterer Böhmer that was the main commercial variety in South Tyrol for many years. Today it has been replaced by other varieties that are more durable and that we see growing up just as aromatic. As the youngest daughter of three siblings, I persuaded our father to grow organic apples. Royal Gala, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Pinova are our current varieties.
At the moment, my father is still taking care of everything, because my daughter Mia is only a few months old and needs my full attention. However, she already accompanies me to the apple orchard when I help my father prune and plant trees or when we simply marvel together at the sea of white blossoms in spring. She can't miss out on plucking, summer pruning and even apple picking either. The baby carrier is always ready. She hangs on me in it and lies there very comfortably. The fresh air in the orchard lulls her right to sleep. It's nice to see how she feels so comfortable in the organic orchard and how she can sleep best right there. Healthy air and lots of exercise, that is and was also my elixir of life. As a teenager I was quite successful in figure skating and also took part in international competitions. As a future organic farmer, I will take care to ensure that beneficial organisms and pests meet in fair competition. My little daughter Mia will also follow in my footsteps. I have already successfully passed my tractor driving licence and I learn what to do from my father every day. My partner, who is an IT technician, also wants to actively support me. He already has an idea for a so-called "smart orchard". It is still in its infancy, but it will certainly become more concrete in the course of time, and we can then implement it together.
Together with my mother, I am already practising being a mindful farmer: We grow many different herbs and vegetables in the garden. For the future, I would like to have some more chickens. As soon as Mia is a bit bigger, there will be more time for that, too. In the meantime, I support my father as best I can in the orchard and my mother in making delicious sauces, pesto and jams, all of which are home-made according to organic guidelines.
