My story
The Unterhuber farm is in Rablà on the valley floor of the lower Val Venosta. It has been in family ownership for years; today, it is run by Walter Gamper and his uncle. Fruit growing has been a way of life here for a long time. Since 2007, Walter has been organic certified for his production of Gala, Red Delicious, Jonagold, Elstar, Rubens, Idared, Jonathan, Fuji and Braeburn. "At the beginning I was convinced mainly by the fact that organic production requires fewer protective measures and is a less intensive way of farming. Now I can see that my fruit trees are progressively becoming a closed ecosystem." This is because Walter's apple orchards are in large blocks which give way to organic meadows on one side and unspoilt mountain forest on the other. Ancient irrigation channels run through the land with hedges and bushes providing a habitat for beneficial organisms. At harvest time, Walter is reminded of the reasons for working harder than everyone else. The intense natural taste of his apples is just reward for all his efforts.
