My story
Our organic farm is situated at an altitude of 667 meters on a sunny slope lined with apple orchards and apricot trees at only 20 minutes on foot from the center of Castelbello. Our „Niedermaierhof“ farm offers farm holidays and is an ideal starting point for hiking or biking tours. Our guests love our home-grown wine called „Sunnenberg“ (Sun Mountain). Unsurprisingly, the position of our farm is also predestined for the cultivation of apples.
When my son Thomas and me converted to organic production, the South Tyrolean Advisory Service was of great help. Thanks to our pragmatic motto „Learning by doing“ we managed to improve and began to feel more and more at ease in the wonder world of organic. Today we take it for granted to promote biodiversity and adopt measures that are sometimes very work-intensive. Sometimes, not everything goes according to plan. We then get angry because we don’t always succeed the first time. A nozzle, for instance, may be blocked when we want to spread our organic fertilizer or the weather does what it wants, which means additional work in the orchard.
Sometimes, we also have difficulties with our apricots but we are constantly able to produce nice quantities of these precious fruits that are used for preparing the best jam far and wide. There is very strong demand for my apricot jam that I sell at Val Venosta’s farmers’ shop at the entrance of Val Senales. Many farmers of the surroundings sell their products there where offer meets the concrete demand for authentic products.
My son Thomas runs the farm. He knows the elements that surround us and is able to use them for himself and his family: He acts in concert with the fertile soil, the cold nights and plenty of sunny days in Lacinigo to produce the best of Val Venosta. When harvest time has come, we celebrate the most beautiful period of the year at the Niedermaierhof farm. We bite into a ripe Gala apple and its intense aroma is a confirmation that we have done everything right. In this way, we can contribute a little bit to shaping the world.
