My story
The Pitschen farm in the village of Morter has been in family ownership for many generations. Karl Heinz Innerhofer is the farmer today and he still counts on his family in growing his Gala, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gloster, Topaz, Florina, Kanzi and Mairac, as well as the old Kalterer and Champagne varieties. Karl Heinz completed his farming education at the Laimburg technical college for fruit production, viticulture and horticulture in South Tyrol. The orchards are in an enclosed area surrounding the farmhouse, "which is the best configuration for biodynamics," says Karl Heinz. He started with the conversion from conventional to organic farming in 1992 and in 1998 he also adopted biodynamic practices in his work. Evidence of this can now be seen everywhere on the farm with inter-row crops, hedges used as habitats for beneficial organisms, compost heaps and the use of biodynamic preparations. For Karl Heinz it is about holistic thinking and living; it is way more than just farming for him.
