Organic farmer - Brugghof

"Organic is like archery."

My story

I attended the technical secondary school for agriculture in Ora. As a farm manager in a very large agricultural fruit growing business, I was able to gain a lot of experience in the organic sector, which now also benefits me in the family business. For me, organic means moving with progress, and I try to implement this modern attitude in all areas of my life: from the climate house to wood chips from our own forest to photovoltaics with battery storage.

Three generations live at the Brugghof farm in Cengles: my parents, my wife, me and the two small children. We all pull together. My grandfather planted the first Golden Delicious in 1976, and today we also grow Gala, Red Delicious, Topaz and, in the future, Bonita. I am a big fan of red and bicolored apples. At 900 meters they find their fertile habitat here and they reflect my adventurous heart.

The still young children sometimes wish for more time with their father, which is not always easy to do, as the work in agriculture keeps me very busy. Then, when there is some time left for holidays, we all love action-packed days full of activities like rafting or similar sports. When I do relax, it's not on holiday, but when I'm alone in the orchard or else pursuing my hobby of many years, archery. I practiced this sport almost professionally for a long time, almost as a Robin Hood from Val Venosta. I also find the necessary balance to my work by cooking for the whole family, and I like to help myself from my mum's garden or from my father's meat, who is a hunter.

I try to approach organic apple growing with the necessary coolness: I don't get nervous quickly when there is a possible fungal attack. I like to let myself be surprised by what nature is up to. I try to let the adventurer in me win and not feel like a flag in the wind. With the Topaz variety, I even follow biodynamic guidelines, which is a kind of royal class in cultivation. As a man of pleasure, it is important to me that I let visually beautiful and, above all, pleasantly aromatic fruits ripen. My father is also a great help in this.

Organic is a bit like archery: If you are relaxed enough, show the necessary attentiveness, stay in the here and now, then the hit comes by itself.
