Mayr Gerhard

BIO Organic Producer – Kleinlehen

„You need an excellent tree to produce an excellent apple.“

My story

The Kleinlehen estate is in Stava, near Naturno and it also offers farmstay holidays. It has been in the Mayr family for generations. In the past they farmed livestock, apricots and grain, as was typical in the Val Venosta. The farm still has a grain mill which harks back to that time. Today the orchards are planted with Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Braeburn, Roho and Gala apples, and Gerhard would like to increase the number of red-skinned varieties in the future. He has run Kleinlehen as a organic-certified farm since 2006. Gerhard's motivation was to minimize the agricultural inputs into the growing process as much as possible and he wanted to sell completely healthy products. Every year in spring, when the weather gets a bit kinder, Gerhard starts to lay the foundations for a healthy apple harvest. Planting young apple trees is his favourite job. "Val Venosta's nature does a lot of the rest. I know I can rely on it for everything."
