My story
As a trained stonemason, I was a passionate perfectionist who worked patiently on his works until they were the way I wanted them. As an organic farmer, I then had to realize that complete control all the way to the final product was no longer possible: I simply no longer work on the artwork alone, but in close collaboration with a very freedom-loving nature that has much more say than I do. In the first year of conversion to organic farming, I was ready to throw in the towel when the foliage and apples showed small black spots from the scab fungus. I had also encountered the aphids in the orchard too early and the lack of experience had an immediate and unfortunately very negative effect on the first harvest.
Today, the exchange of information with many advisors and a close circle of friends of like-minded organic farmers pays off and my tendency towards perfectionism has necessarily been somewhat tempered. I was simply forced to become more relaxed and "chilled out". I learned to understand nature better and to accept its strong say unconditionally.
My Royal Gala tastes even better to me today than before, as do my Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Envy and Ambrosia. Of course, there is always a certain mental tension in our kind of farming because there are no guarantees of a smooth season and this one is very long. However, with many sustainable measures, we can actively shape and influence the outcome.
As the youngest son of four siblings, I took over the "Kleinmöslhof" farm in Laces in 2014 and run it together with my family. At the time of the main harvest in September and October, we additionally employ some helpers, while we harvest the Royal Gala in August and the Envy in November all by ourselves.
The homemade bird nests made of stone pine, the many insect hotels made of old pallets or rotten bamboo poles provide a happy home for great tits, the colorful hoopoe, and the useful earwigs, so that everyday life on the farm and in the orchards around the crystal-clear Plima River is always very lively and varied. With my easy-going and positive attitude to life, it also seems natural to me today that nature always wants to have a say.
