Since the 1990s, Günther Platzgummer has been growing organic apples at his fruit farm in the village of Tablà, at the foot of the Tramontana Mountain. His family all help out as a great team, and the farm has gained educational status. Günther says that his extensive, practical experience has been just as instrumental to his success as his technical education in fruit production and viticulture. The varieties are mostly Golden and Red Delicious which grow with exceptional aromas and fine skins thanks to the orchard's hillside location. Günther is an experienced custodian of nature and his view is that "the land is the most important thing, the plant's true food source". As a result he encourages soil health and takes care to use natural fertilisers. No wonder then that Günther's guests especially love his traditional orchards. They come for farmstays in eco-holiday homes made of timber, wattle and daub, sourced from woodland on the estate. Günther's guided tour of the farm and his educational treks on llamas are always a big hit. Just like his organic apples.
