My story
Weisspinter farm belongs to Simon Platzgummer and is located in Ciardes on a sun-drenched scree cone abutting the Monte Sole Mountain in Val Venosta. Simon is the third generation of the family to farm here. His mother helps out where she can. He picked up the building blocks of his knowledge of organics when he studied at the technical college for fruit production, viticulture and horticulture in Laimburg, South Tyrol. Since 2011, he has tended his orchards of Golden Delicious, Gala, Pinova and Red Delicious trees with organic certification. Because three quarters of his land is on steep slopes, it is especially well exposed to the rays of the mountain sun. The apples ripen particularly well here because the nights are very cool. Simon's main focus is on managing the land. He never tires of using natural measures to improve it and he loves seeing the beneficial organisms which colonise his orchard. Organics definitely represent a higher workload: "But it is worth it every time, because it means that by harvest you can actually pick a really high-value product."
