My story
The Sigelguthof managed by organic producer Gerald Weithaler is situated in Rablà wide below the snow-covered peaks of the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park. It is very labor-intensive because of its small size. Decades ago, Gerald's grandfather used to grow strawberries here, which he would sell on the fruit market in Merano. These days there are apple trees as the Siglgut farm. Golden Delicious, Red Delicious and Topaz do very well here. Gerald's main job is as a mechanic but he loves working outdoors amongst nature. It restores balance and is very satisfying, even if the orchards are steep and require a lot of manual labour. "There is nothing better than the evening sun and looking down, like from a balcony, at the valley." When he converted the farm to organics in 2006 he did not have to do a great deal of work. "We never applied much fertilizer anyway." His strong affinity with his environment has convinced him to work in ever closer harmony with nature. If something is working well, Gerald tries to leave it alone. This commitment is unconditional. "Your yield is less, but all the better for it."
