“BioFach is an important trade fair for Bio Val Venosta, one of the market leaders for the production of organic apples in both Italy and Europe,” says Gerhard Eberhöfer, sales manager Bio Val Venosta. He informs us about the most important news 2019, market data and future prospects of Bio Val Venosta.

New packing house for BIO Val Venosta 2019 will see a fundamental logistical-strategic change for Bio Val Venosta: from September, our BIO department will be able to use a new structure that is exclusively dedicated to Val Venosta’s organic production. Organic is strongly on the rise and Bio Val Venosta has established itself as the market leader for the production of organic apples in both Italy and Europe. According to growth forecasts, we will have about 1,000 hectares of organic cultivation areas with 50,000 tons of organic apples in 2021. These numbers require an appropriate infrastructure to guarantee a quality of service proportional to the constantly increasing volumes: 12 production lines with a 60% increase of the daily packaging capacity, a high-rack storage for 18,000 bins and a sorting plant for organic apples only.

The new Juval packing house is the most modern one in Europe as far as technology and flexibility for processing is concerned and will provide substantial benefits to Bio Val Venosta in terms of fast and flexible responses to market requirements and quality of service for the client.
Sales and markets Bio Val Venosta had a record harvest in 2018, but not so much due to the yield per hectare, which was standard, but mainly due to the cultivation areas that have grown by about 8-10% in recent years: 620 hectares of organic cultivation areas in 2018, 800 hectares in 2019 and about 1,000 hectares until 2021.

We had a relatively modest start of the marketing year due to a record harvest in Europe with great product availability here and oversea. Moreover, the warm climate in November did not encourage the consumption of apples either. From the beginning of January, however, the market has been recovering with increasing volumes and orders and generally satisfactory prices. We are nevertheless far away from last year’s prices that we will remember as “record prices in a special year”. Italy, Bio Val Venosta’s main market, is very receptive and the European demand is growing as well with differences between the single countries due to the availability of organic apples in their own country. Moreover, positive developments come from new markets as the first containers with Bio Val Venosta apples are already on their way to Asia – namely Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore – with confirmations from Dubai, Israel and Brazil as well.

Varieties Our sales proceed as planned and are in line with our sales plan where all variables (overproduction, product from oversea and warm autumn climate) that slowed down the consumption of apples were taken into account. I am very optimistic and confident about the continuation of the season because Bio Val Venosta will be able to serve both the Italian market and the most important foreign clients for 12 months with an exceptional product of excellent intrinsic qualities: Golden will be available until September, Jonagold and Idared until July and Pinova until June. The sales season for Gala, our most important variety in terms of quantities, will end at the end of March.

As far as our new varieties are concerned, Bonita Bio is distinguished by its attractive, bright red color and its aromatic, slightly acidulous taste. The sales of Bonita Bio, a variety that VI.P and VOG have exclusive rights in Europe for, started at the end of January with positive feedback. Ambrosia™ Bio, which was available from mid-October to mid-December, achieved good results, whereas Kanzi® Bio will be available until early June.

Traceability, certified origin and safety are the values underlying our BioGraphy project that will again be enriched by new organic producers and contents this year. If you insert the producer’s name that you find on your Bio Val Venosta apples on the biography.vip.coop site, you can discover our production area and see who has cultivated your organic apples and where.
