Diligence and creativity
for more sustainability

Martin Tappeiner from Parcines is the winner of the „Mei liabste Wies“ competition

Martin Tappeiner, an organic apple producer from Val Venosta,
runs the Pröfinghof farm in Parcines with great commitment and ingenuity.
His effort for biodiversity and ecological balance at his farm has now been awarded:
He is the winner of the „Mei liabste Wies“ (My favorite orchard) competition.
You can see Martin Tappeiner’s love for nature everywhere at the Pröfinghof farm in Parcines: well-kept apple orchards, naturally designed herb and flower beds, hedges and rose bushes as well as lovely decoration elements surround his farm where everything
is in full bloom. His great-grandfather bought the Pröfinghof farm to the west of the village around 1900; today Martin, his wife and his son David run the farm with great diligence and commitment. In 2014, the Tappeiner family converted to organic production, „and we are still very happy about this decision.“

"Organic production demands a lot but also gives you a lot"

Martin Tappeiner devoted himself intensely to biodiversity and the promotion of useful insects and trained as a soil practitioner. He created numerous places of retreat and nesting places for many animal and insect species in his apple orchards. They include poles and perches for vultures, many dry-stone walls for lizards or deadwood and nest boxes for birds. Moreover, there’s an apiary with humming bees whose honey is available in the farm shop. The roofed insect
hotels made by his wife are a special eye-catcher: Several floors with pieces of wood and clay offer the insects room for nesting and hibernating. Preserving the ecological balance, promoting biodiversity and more sustainability: Martin Tappeiner and his family pursue these goals with great sense of responsibility and respect for humans and the environment. „We have to work with and not against nature,” says Martin. “This is a lot of work, but it also gives joy.“
Farm shop Pröfinghof

The small farm shop awaits you with homemade specialties.

Martin delivers his organic Gala, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apples to the cooperative, whereas his wife prepares tasty jams, juices and dried fruit with their herbs and fruit. You can find them on the wooden shelves of the lovingly decorated farm shop next to self-made gifts, homemade honey and fresh eggs from “happy chickens”. The family’s commitment has now been awarded with a prize. In spring 2018, the South Tyrolean Apple Consortium organized the „Mei liabste Wies“ competition for the first time: The aim was to award particularly aesthetical, innovative and ecological orchards and thus the producers’ commitment for more sustainability. 57 producers participated in the competition that was won by Martin Tappeiner and German Mair from Prissiano.
